Former Wold Cup star Ossie Ardiles injured in car crash

The former Tottenham star was airlifted to hospital in Stanley and received 20 stitches, but is "fine" according to his son


Former Tottenham star Ossie Ardiles had to have more than 20 stitches in his head after he was involved in a car accident in the Falkland Islands.
The ex-Argentina international is in the Islands with his former Spurs team-mate Ricky Villa filming an ESPN documentary about the impact the 1982 Falklands conflict had on their football careers.
The Mercopress news agency reports that Ardiles, 61, is believed to have been driving the rented 4x4 vehicle when it left the gravel road between the British military base at Mount Pleasant and Darwin settlement, on East Falkland at around 9pm local time.
A source told Mirror Sport: "The accident happened near Darwin. They had been out for the day and were heading back to Stanley when they swerved to avoid a sheep and crashed."
As well as Ardiles and Villa, five other people are believed to have been in the vehicle, including Ardiles' British born son, who is working with the ESPN production team.
Local emergency services were scrambled and the injured were flown by military helicopter from the accident site to the King Edward VII Memorial hospital in Stanley.
Ardiles' other son, Pablo told the BBC: "My understanding is he is fine," he said.
"He has 20 odd stitches in his head and my understanding is he has been hospitalised overnight. But he's fine.
"Ricky Villa and my brother were out there but they are okay. and are back in the hotel," he said.

A spokesman for the Falkland Islands Government told Mirror Sport this morning: "I can confirm that a there was a road traffic accident involving seven individuals which occurred yesterday in the Islands, and thanks to the prompt action of Falkland Islands emergency services and the British forces, they were evacuated to the hospital in Stanley, where there injuries were assessed.
"Three members of the group remained in hospital overnight for observations and further treatments and the remaining four were released following treatment for minor injuries."
One of those kept is hospital is believed to be Ardiles.
Ardiles joined Tottenham after the 1978 World Cup but was forced to go on loan to Paris Saint-Germain in 1982 after the Falklands conflict. He returned to Spurs in 1983, playing for the club until 1988. He also went on the manage the club.     
A statement from Tottenham said: "All at club wish Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa speedy recovery after they were involved in a car accident in the Falklands last night."
